There are 4 strokes in swimming- butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle. We will focus on freestyle as it is the most common and easiest stroke to do. There are 4 main phrases to freestyle: the catch, the pull, the exit, and the recovery. The catch is when the hand enters the water. The pull is when the hand moves perpendicular to the swimmer through the water. The exit phase is when the swimmer's arm and hand are parallel to their body and is exiting the water by their hip. The recovery phase occurs when the swimmer's arm is above water preparing for the next stroke.
