Skin friction drag “is due to the friction between the water and the swimmer's body as the water flows over it.” In order to reduce this type of drag, swimmers will shave their bodies and wear technical racing suits at big meets. These swimsuits compress the swimmer’s body reducing overall drag and are coated in a repellant material. “According to Speedo, the suit reduces drag, or water resistance, by 38% compared with an ordinary LYCRA suit. This reduction in drag translates into approximately a 4% increase in speed for swimmers."
